But that's exactly what happened on 1st and 2nd November 2008.
For two days, the Lorraine Motel was transformed into the Sam’s Town stage at the 2008 River Arts Fest.
The party was sponsored by Coors Brewery, Harrah’s and Sam’s Town gambling casinos. Drunken partygoers were entertained by belly dancers.
Where did it all go wrong?
When Dr. King arrived in Memphis in April 1968, he didn’t come to visit a museum or preach about the past. No; he came to deal with problems of the here and now – and make a difference. Those problems still exist today. The homeless are still homeless, the disadvantaged remain disadvantaged.
I am disgusted that instead of using the Lorraine Motel to continue Dr. King’s dream, it has become a tragic embarrassment to any right minded person who respects and values the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The River Arts Fest is a desecration of Dr. King’s memory and the misuse of the Lorraine Motel is a national scandal.
